Which option is right for you?

eSIM (easiest)

Install before you fly. Online the moment you land. Best for short trips and tech-comfortable travellers.

Local SIM (best value)

Picked up at the airport for ~BBD $60. Best for stays of a week or more — includes a Barbados number.

Hotel Wi-Fi only

Free at most hotels and cafés. Fine for relaxed stays where you don't need data away from base.

  • Sheraton Mall — Sargeant's Village

    Christ Church (south)

Full-service Digicel and Flow stores. Useful if you skipped the airport kiosk.

  • Broad Street, Bridgetown

    Capital

Digicel and Flow flagship stores. Good for SIM swaps and plan changes.

  • Sunset Crest / Holetown

    West coast

Flow store at Sunset Crest; Digicel kiosks in nearby plazas.

Wi-Fi on the island

Hotel & villa Wi-Fi

Almost every hotel offers free Wi-Fi. Speed is usually fine for video calls on the south and west coasts; patchier on the east coast.

Cafés & restaurants

Most cafés, beach bars and shopping centres (Limegrove, Sheraton Mall, Massy supermarkets) offer free Wi-Fi — ask staff for the password.

Public Wi-Fi

Grantley Adams Airport offers free Wi-Fi. Bridgetown has limited public hotspots — don't rely on them.

Use a VPN on public networks

Avoid logging into banking or email on open Wi-Fi without a VPN. A local SIM/eSIM is safer for sensitive tasks.

Quick answers

Is my phone unlocked?

Check with your carrier before you fly. A locked phone won't accept a Barbados SIM. eSIMs need a phone that supports eSIM (iPhone XS+, most recent Samsung/Pixel).

Do I need my passport?

Yes. Both Digicel and Flow require ID to register a prepaid SIM. Bring your passport to the kiosk or upload it for eSIM activation.

Will roaming work?

Yes, but it's usually expensive. UK/EU and US roaming bundles can cost $10+/day. A local SIM or eSIM is almost always cheaper for stays over 2–3 days.

Can I keep my number?

Use a dual-SIM phone (or eSIM + physical SIM) to keep your home number active for WhatsApp/iMessage while using local data.

Is 5G available?

Digicel has launched 5G in parts of Bridgetown and the south coast. Most visitors won't notice a difference — 4G LTE is plenty for streaming and maps.
