Driving in Barbados
Drive on the left
Barbados drives on the left, British-style. Overtaking is on the right. Take it slow for the first hour, especially at junctions.
Local driving permit
Visitors need a temporary Barbados driving permit. Rental companies issue it for a small fee (around BBD $20) when you collect the car — bring your home licence.
Roundabouts
Give way to traffic already on the roundabout (coming from your right). Indicate left as you exit.
Fuel stations
Sol and Rubis stations are widespread on the south, west and around Bridgetown. The east and north have fewer — top up before long drives.
Parking
Most beaches and attractions have free informal parking. Bridgetown has paid lots; never leave valuables visible in the car.
Road conditions
Main roads are good. Inland and east-coast roads are narrow with blind bends, no shoulders, and occasional potholes. Avoid driving at night if you don't know the route.
Airport transfers
From Grantley Adams International (BGI) on the south coast. Official airport taxis have fixed indicative fares — confirm before you depart.
| Area | Taxi | Drive |
|---|---|---|
Bridgetown / St Michael Quickest run from Grantley Adams. Traffic at peak hours can add 15 minutes. | USD $25–30 | 20–30 min |
South Coast (St Lawrence Gap, Oistins) Closest tourist strip to the airport. Cheapest transfer. | USD $20–30 | 10–25 min |
West Coast (Holetown, Speightstown) Longest common transfer. Pre-book if arriving late. | USD $55–75 | 45–70 min |
East Coast (Bathsheba, St Joseph) Few taxis return from the east at night — arrange a return pickup. | USD $60–80 | 45–60 min |
Tip
Many hotels offer pre-booked transfers at a fixed rate — often the same as a taxi but with a name-board pickup, which is easier after a long flight.

Safety & local advice
- Agree a taxi fare in BBD or USD before you set off — there are no meters.
- Carry small BBD notes for buses, ZRs and route taxis ($3.50 flat fare).
- Wear a seatbelt — it's the law, even in the back.
- Don't flag down unmarked vehicles. Legitimate taxis have a 'Z' plate.
- On the east coast, avoid driving narrow roads after dark if you don't know them.
- Save your hotel's address and phone number offline in case you need to be redirected.
Fares and travel times are indicative — confirm with your driver or rental company before you set off.
